Bats are a European Protected Species, EPS for short, and are protected from disturbance by law in the UK. There is a wealth of information online from sources such .gov.uk (https://www.gov.uk/guidance/bats-surveys-and-mitigation-for-development-projects) and the Bat Conservation Trust (http://www.bats.org.uk/pages/nbmp.html). Many activities may affect bats and, due to their protected status, measures need to be taken to reduce possible risks of such activities. Examples of work which could affect bats are;
- demolishing buildings
- extensions that block roof access
- wind turbines
- barn conversions
- removal of trees or hedgerows
- building or maintenance of roads
If you are planning to carry out any of these activities you could be required to survey your area to find out if bats are using your site. For more information check out our video on bat surveys.
